When people remember Queen Elizabeth, they often think of her beloved corgis, happily waddling by her side.
In honor of the late queen’s 98th birthday, a charming English town has paid tribute to the former leader of the church and her loyal companions — her corgis. Recently revealed to the public on April 21, in Oakham, England, the statue was crafted by the talented London-based sculptor Hywel Pratley. The magnificent bronze sculpture showcases a lifelike depiction of the queen adorned in her regal attire, with her cherished dogs resting at the base.
Hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the unveiling of the statue of the former reigning monarch, who passed away at the age of 96 in 2022, according to an Instagram post by the Rutland County Council. The queen, who held the throne for an impressive 70 years, was also the longest-reigning monarch in British history. The county council stated that this statue serves as the “first permanent memorial” to honor the queen.
Dr. Sarah Furness, the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, took the initiative to commission the installation of the statue following the passing of the queen. Funding for the construction of the statue was made possible through contributions from local businesses and the public, as well as crowdfunding efforts. The design of the statue includes imagery of corgi dogs, which was created by local children.
During the ceremony, Furness expressed in her speech how Queen Elizabeth’s warmth is what most people remember about her. According to The New York Times, Furness stated, “By showcasing Queen Elizabeth’s affection for dogs, we are able to witness her true humanity.”
