A jury in Alabama convicted a former prison sergeant of federal charges in connection with the 2018 beating of an inmate on Thursday.
Devlon Williams, 37, a former Alabama Department of Corrections sergeant, was convicted of deprivation of rights under color of law, fabrication of records, and obstruction of justice.
Prosecutors claim Williams punched and kicked an inmate on the ground at Staton Correctional Facility who was not resisting or posing a threat. The Department of Justice is currently suing Alabama in civil court, alleging that state inmates are subjected to unconstitutional levels of violence as a result of inmate-on-inmate attacks and a pattern of excessive force by authorities.
The charges have been refuted by the authorities.
