When you come across a wildlife attack video clip and someone mentions that it happened so fast, you would usually expect a blurry and hard-to-see footage, even with the help of freeze frames. However, that’s not the case with this particular video.
Kayak angler Scott Haraguchi had a heart-pounding encounter with a tiger shark while out in the waters off Hawaii. Although he wasn’t there to catch sharks, one nearly caught him. The footage he captured during the incident is incredibly clear and showcases the ferociousness of the encounter.
Last year, the attack took place, and Haraguchi, who was using a mounted GoPro to document his fishing adventures, recently uploaded the complete video on YouTube. Alongside the footage, he also provided a potential explanation for the attack.
In an accompanying post on Instagram, Haraguchi addressed the speculation surrounding why a tiger shark would unexpectedly collide with a kayak. He expressed his hope that the video he shared would provide answers to those questions.
While fishing with a friend off Kualoa, Oahu, Haraguchi managed to reel in a grouper. However, shortly after, a tiger shark unexpectedly emerged from the water and collided with his kayak. Surprisingly, Haraguchi had not bled the grouper, leading him to believe that the shark’s aggressive behavior was not influenced by scent.
As Haraguchi ponders in a voiceover on the video, the shark approaches the front of the kayak, seemingly to ram it or scare it, rather than to eat it. However, as it slides up the side of the kayak, he realizes that the shark is not interested in tasting a seal, whale, or any other living creature.
In the actual footage, however, it definitely appears that the shark is devouring the kayak, so we’ll trust Haraguchi’s account of the incident. He also seems unsure if he actually kicked the shark away, but in the video, you can clearly see his foot in close proximity to the shark’s head.
Haraguchi and his companion stayed in the area, keeping their feet safely out of the water, for a few minutes. Eventually, they came across a wounded seal.
