During an interview broadcast on ABC’s “This Week,” Andrés expressed his frustration, stating, “This has been going on for far too long. It’s been six months of targeting anything that appears to be moving.”
“This is no longer just a war against terror. It is no longer just a war about defending Israel. At this point, it feels like a war against humanity itself,” expressed Andrés. The renowned celebrity chef’s voice quivered with emotion as tears streamed down his face during the interview.
Last week, during their departure from the Deir al-Balah warehouse, the aid workers tragically lost their lives in an Israeli airstrike. Working in collaboration with the Israeli military, they had meticulously planned their movements and were traveling in armored vehicles that prominently displayed the World Central Kitchen logo.
Israel admitted that the attack was a “grave mistake” and acknowledged that the military had wrongly identified a World Central Kitchen worker as a Hamas gunman. As a consequence, two officers in the Israeli military were fired for their involvement in the attack.
In his interview with ABC News, Andrés rejected Israel’s explanation, stating that it is not necessary to always involve Hamas whenever something happens.
Andrés’ interview coincided with the six-month anniversary of Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel, marking the beginning of the war in Gaza.
The United States is exerting pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government regarding the increasing civilian casualties in Gaza. There have been suggestions from officials to consider withholding aid to Israel as a means to facilitate a cease-fire.
President Joe Biden, after having a conversation with Andrés last week, expressed his strong outrage regarding the deaths that occurred at World Central Kitchen. He stressed the importance of taking “immediate” actions to ensure the safety of civilians and aid workers in order to receive continued support from the United States during the Gaza war.
“They were courageous and selfless, providing food to hungry civilians amidst the chaos of war,” Biden expressed. “Their deaths are undeniably tragic.”
During his ABC interview, Andrés expressed his deep anguish over the attack, stating that it is something he cannot forgive and that it will haunt him for the rest of his life.
