The Manhattan district attorney’s office, in a plea to the judge on Wednesday, has implored the rejection of former President Donald Trump’s bid to postpone his upcoming criminal hush money trial. Despite the significant pretrial publicity surrounding the case, the trial is slated to commence in less than two weeks.
The prosecutors contended that a significant portion of the publicity that Trump’s attorneys protested about is actually a result of his own actions.
According to assistant district attorney Matthew Colangelo, the defendant’s constant use of rhetoric is creating a lot of publicity. He argues that it would be unfair to grant the defendant an adjournment based on the media attention that he is actively seeking.
According to Trump’s attorneys, the extensive media coverage surrounding this case in Manhattan has potentially influenced potential jurors and created bias. However, prosecutors argue that a careful and thorough jury selection process can still result in an impartial jury.
According to Colangelo, the defendant has not been able to prove that the publicity surrounding this case is prejudicial in any way. Moreover, he states that it is not so inflammatory that it would jeopardize the fundamental fairness of the trial.
Trump has made eight attempts to delay the start of the trial, which is scheduled to begin on April 15 with jury selection.
Trump has entered a plea of not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records. Prosecutors claim that the former president was attempting to conceal long-standing allegations of an affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels from voters prior to the 2016 election.
