Former Governor Scott Walker emphasized the importance of voters’ approval for a constitutional amendment that would prohibit the use of “Zuckerbucks.” He argued that such a measure is necessary to prevent politicians from undermining the trust and confidence of the electorate.
Walker emphasized the significance of elections, stating that they should not be left to the discretion of temporary authorities. In an interview with News Talk 1130 WISN’s Jay Weber, he expressed this viewpoint.
Wisconsin voters will have the opportunity to vote on the amendment during the upcoming election on Tuesday. If passed, this amendment would prohibit local election managers from accepting any external funds, grants, or gifts to assist with the election process.
In 2020, the Center for Tech and Civic Life, which received support from Mark Zuckerberg, allocated over $6 million for election operations in Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Racine, and Kenosha. This proposed ban follows their significant financial contributions.
According to local election officials, a portion of the funds was allocated for purchasing hand sanitizer and face masks. However, the majority of the funds were utilized for initiatives aimed at encouraging voter participation.
In Green Bay, it is evident from the emails that the CTCL group had a significant influence on the city’s election operation.
Walker believes that every voter should consider outside influence of that nature as crossing the line.
According to Walker, it is logical for elections to be standardized in the state, regardless of political affiliation. This includes closing the polls at 8 p.m. and implementing similar standards across the board. Walker believes that only official government officials should be responsible for running elections, ensuring transparency and accountability in the process. It is important for everyone to be able to witness and verify that the right procedures are being followed.
In regards to outside election funding, Walker expressed his support for a ban on the Koch brothers’ non-profit organization, just as he supports a ban on Zuckerberg’s left-leaning group.
Critics argue that the issue of election grants in Wisconsin should be addressed by lawmakers. However, Governor Scott Walker maintains that Republicans already made attempts to close any loopholes allowing for outside money but were ultimately thwarted by Governor Tony Evers’ veto.
