Introducing the owner and operator of Kansas City’s inaugural Vietnamese coffee shop

March is Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the contributions and achievements of women throughout history. It serves as a reminder of the challenges they have overcome and the progress they have made. In Kansas City, there is no shortage of women-owned and operated businesses that are making a significant impact and setting an example for future generations.

Jackie Nguyen is a notable figure in the coffee industry. She is the proud owner of Café Cà Phê, which holds the distinction of being Kansas City’s very first Vietnamese coffee shop.

“I began this journey during the pandemic after losing my job,” Jackie shared. “My intention was to find solace and temporary respite here in Kansas City.”

After completely starting over, Jackie ventured into the coffee business.

“Before I owned a coffee shop, I used to be a Broadway actor, performing in musicals,” she shared. “I had the opportunity to tour through Kansas City with the musical Miss Saigon.”

Every sip of the bold coffee brings back memories of the journey she has traveled, accompanied by genuine smiles that reflect the distance she has covered.

“I followed my passion for theater and went after it. I also pursued my dream of opening a coffee shop and didn’t let being a woman or a woman of color hinder me,” Jackie expressed. “I genuinely hope this message resonates, particularly with young Asian girls.”

It is no coincidence that her business is located less than half a mile from CPKC Stadium. This serves as a powerful reminder of the incredible strides women are making all over the world.

“I’m a 35-year-old woman, but I still feel like a little girl when I see so many incredible professional women out there who are absolutely crushing it. It’s truly inspiring and motivates me to keep pushing myself and achieving great things,” Jackie expressed.

Women’s history and Kansas City history are intertwined in the trials, tribulations, and unwavering perseverance of individuals like Jackie. Despite facing numerous challenges, she never lost sight of her dreams.

Jackie emphasized the importance of perseverance when it comes to pursuing one’s beliefs and dreams. “If you have a belief, you have a dream, you just keep going,” he said.
