Suspect in Police Shootout to Undergo Another Mental Observation, Rules Judge

Mocobizscene- DC Superior Court Judge Maribeth Raffinan has recently issued an order for a fresh mental competency examination of a defendant involved in a non-fatal shooting case with the police. This decision comes as a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings.

A man named Stephen Rattigan, 48, who goes by the alias James Julius, is facing multiple charges in connection with the shooting of three Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers on February 14. The incident took place on the 5000 block of Hanna Place, SE. Rattigan is charged with assault with intent to kill while armed, cruelty to animals, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and assault on a police officer while armed. One of the officers sustained non-gunshot related injuries.

In Judge Raffinan’s courtroom, Rattigan’s defense attorney, Stephen Logerfo, asked for a fresh mental competency examination for Rattigan. Logerfo argued that Rattigan had declined to attend his previous session due to confusion, but now recognized the significance of the testing for his case.

Judge Raffinan advised Rattigan to refrain from making any statements on his own and instead encouraged him to let his defense attorney speak on his behalf. Furthermore, she granted the request for another competency examination.

The parties are scheduled to reconvene on March 8 to discuss the outcome of the examination.
