INDIANAPOLIS: On their way to work on Sunday afternoon, an IMPD officer was hurt in a major crash on the southwest side of Indianapolis. The incident happened at 1:07 p.m., according to IMPD, close to Kentucky Avenue and Mooresville Road. Northbound Highway 67 was still closed in the 7900 block as of 4:17 p.m. on Sunday.
A second officer, who was also en route to work, was observed by IMPD stopping in the left lane with flashing lights in order to retrieve a mattress that had flown out of the back of a pickup truck. That truck’s driver stayed on the site and talked with the detectives.
When the second IMPD car got close, it sideswiped another passenger car that was traveling north. About twenty feet away, the second patrol car, which had been rear-ended by the first, rolled onto its roof.
Firefighters had to free the second cop, who was then taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where their status is listed as critical but stable. Although he was taken to the hospital, the passenger car’s driver did not appear to be hurt.
After being reloaded with the misplaced mattress, the pickup truck drove off. According to IMPD Lt. Shane Foley, crash investigators will decide whether to issue a citation to the truck driver for their involvement in the collision.
