Fungal Infection Resistant to Drugs Spreading in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana

Mocobizscene- The drug-resistant fungal disease is known for its lethal nature. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) experts have labeled it as a global health threat. It is rapidly spreading across the United States and has now reached our region in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. Illinois appears to be leading the fight against this outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported an increase in C. Auris infections.

How Much Do You Know About C. auris?

Also known as Candida auris, this type of yeast can cause life-threatening infections and can easily spread among patients in hospitals and nursing homes. The severity of symptoms varies depending on the location of the infection, according to the CDC.

There is not a common set of symptoms specific for C. auris infections.

Healthy individuals can be exposed to C. auris without any complications, but they can still unknowingly spread it to other patients. Healthcare providers can accurately detect a C. auris infection by conducting a culture sample or colonization screening, or by collecting a specimen such as blood or urine.

How Common Is It?

Discovered in 2009, the CDC is closely collaborating with healthcare personnel and staff to contain and prevent the future spread of the fungus. The challenge lies in the fungus’s resistance to antifungal medications, making treatment and containment significantly more difficult.

According to the Irish Star, the most recent data from 2022 reveals that there have been approximately 5,754 screening cases nationwide. Out of these cases, 276 were recorded in Illinois and 87 in Indiana.

Unfortunately, it appears that C. auris is here to stay for the time being. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been issuing multiple warnings regarding this disease since its initial discovery, but it continues to persist without showing any signs of slowing down.
