Geneva County teen dead in ATV, A woman from Gadsden has been charged with criminally negligent murder in the death of a Jacksonville State University student who was hit by a car while crossing the street on campus in November 2022.
Olivia Lowrey, who is 19 years old, was caught on Wednesday and got out of jail after paying a bond. A Facebook post from the Jacksonville Police Department says that a court date has been set for August 1.
Police say Leah Tarvin was hit by Lowrey’s car on November 2, 2022, as she crossed Alabama Highway 21 in front of JSU’s Brewer Hall.
Tarvin, who lived in Holly Pond and was 22 years old, was treated at the scene and flown to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where she died on November 4. She was a Marching Southerners band member and majored in criminal investigations.
At the time, news stories said that Lowrey had stopped at the scene. After that, the Jacksonville police started an investigation with help from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency post in the city.
According to the Facebook post, investigators looked at data from cell phones, vehicles, and surveillance cameras. They also talked to multiple witnesses and contacted experts on GPS data.
In a statement after the accident, JSU officials complained about the number of accidents at school crosswalks on Alabama Highways 21 and 204. They said that in three similar accidents in 2022, four pedestrians were hurt.
They asked people to call the state Department of Transportation and said that the university and city couldn’t do much about state highways because they were run by the state.
