Mocobizscene-Wednesday saw the sentencing of a Newark, New Jersey, gang member to 12 years in federal prison for his role in the shooting death of a rival gang member.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office District of New Jersey said on Wednesday that Tre Byrd, 22, a member of the Rollin’ 60s Neighborhood Crips, had entered a guilty plea in October 2023 to a conspiracy involving racketeer influence and corrupt organizations (RICO). Authorities claim that Byrd is also known by the street names “Bands” and “G Bandz.”
The federal government has classified the Rollin’ 60s Neighborhood Crips as an interstate criminal organization that is in charge of both the distribution of illegal substances and violent crimes. At least six states are currently home to the gang, which has its roots in Los Angeles.
According to court filings, Byrd was a member of the gang’s Silverbacc Gorillas section, which operates throughout the counties of Essex, Middlesex, Mercer, and Union in New Jersey. Irvington was his area, and according to the cops, he was well-known for stealing automobiles to be used as leverage in other gang members’ crimes.
Investigators looking into the gang discovered that Byrd had discussions on social media with other members regarding the March 20, 2019, scheduled assassination of the rival gang member. Authorities claim that Elijah Williams, also known as “Lil Smith,” a co-conspirator in the crime, shot and killed the associate close to Irvington High School.
According to the indictment, the victim was a member of the Jungle Boys gang and was accused of killing a Rollin’ 60s member in 2017. The victim was not named in the indictment.
Additionally, investigators found that Byrd participated in an armed robbery on June 20, 2020, in Newark, where he and a companion, Abdul Yarrell, took around $1,000 in cash from a victim using a.22 caliber revolver, according to the authorities. Byrd will also serve five years of supervised release as part of his sentence.
