Man from Bloomfield Receives 35-Year Prison Sentence for Murder

Mocobizscene- Lamar Sommers, a 36-year-old resident of Bloomfield, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder of Jahque Benbow, a 23-year-old from Irvington. This decision was made by Superior Court Judge Michael L. Ravin, as announced by Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II.

On October 10, 2023, Sommers was convicted by a jury for first-degree conspiracy, first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Assistant Prosecutor Ventola expressed deep sorrow over the tragic circumstances surrounding Mr. Benbow’s untimely demise. In particular, she emphasized the heartbreaking reality that his newborn child, born just hours after his passing, will never have the chance to know their father. This profound loss only adds to the overall tragedy of the situation.
