Maryland man faces charges for injuring officer with knife during theft at Safeway

Mocobizscene-A man from Maryland was taken into custody after he used a knife to harm a loss prevention officer who was trying to prevent him from stealing items from a Safeway grocery store.

William Fernando Calix, aged 31, faced charges of theft and first-degree assault. He was later released on a $10,000 unsecured personal bond. Christian Alexander Gonzalez, an 18-year-old, was also charged with theft in connection to the incident and was subsequently released from custody.

Montgomery County Police swiftly responded to an armed robbery report at the Safeway in the 10500 block of Connecticut Avenue on Tuesday, around 1 p.m., according to a press release issued by the police. Maryland Governor Moore and lawmakers advocate for enhanced cooperation within the juvenile justice system The two suspects took the merchandise and exited the store.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they immediately engaged in a conversation with the loss prevention officer, who proceeded to provide a detailed description of the suspects. The officers wasted no time and promptly broadcasted the description of the suspects over the radio. Thanks to their quick response, the two suspects were swiftly located in the 3300 block of University Blvd. West.

Calix and Gonzalez were apprehended with the stolen merchandise, and the loss prevention officer positively identified them as the suspects.

The loss prevention officer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.
