MIAMI –Police say that after being instructed to do so in a dream, a Miami woman allegedly slashed her dog Sparky “several times” in the neck. As a result, she is charged with felony animal cruelty. Elena Barakova Cowan, 37, of Edgewater, was apprehended by the police on Friday, following a two-month investigation into the incident.
On November 14, Barakova Cowan reportedly brought the dog to a veterinarian for treatment; Miami police were promptly dispatched, as stated in the arrest report.
According to the report, she informed the officer that she “had a dream in which she was tasked with performing a sacrifice to the gods in order to save humanity” after “approximately four days of sleep deprivation.” This dream prompted her to awaken, proceed to her kitchen, retrieve a knife, and “cut the dog’s neck several times.”
The arrest report states that the dog sustained at least two superficial wounds and two more that were “deeper and overlapping.” According to police, Sparky survived the assault and was subsequently adopted by Miami-Dade Animal Services.
Friday shortly after 4:00 p.m., Barakova Cowan was apprehended by the police at the Coral Gables Branch Court building, located at 3100 Ponce de Leon Blvd.
As of Monday morning, the Bulgarian national, who is charged with animal cruelty with the intent to injure or murder (a second-degree felony), was no longer listed in Miami-Dade jail records.
