Governor Kathy Hochul has made an important announcement regarding the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation employee Aaron J. Peters. In honor of Peters’ contributions and service, flags on NYS buildings will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday. This gesture serves as a tribute to Peters’ dedication and impact within the organization.
Hochul stated that Peters, a member of the regional sawyer crew, tragically lost his life on January 17 during tree removal operations at Golden Hill State Park in Niagara County.
“Aaron Peters’ tragic death reminds us that New York State employees often put themselves in harm’s way while working to improve the safety of their fellow citizens and colleagues. He will not be forgotten by his friends and family, and my heart goes out to all of those whose lives he touched.”
– Governor Hochul
According to the governor’s office, Peters has been employed at the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for a duration of three years. During this time, he actively participated in various roles such as being a part of the regional ropes access team and sawyer crew. Interestingly, Peters also has strong family connections within the state park system, as his father, Ron Peters, recently retired as the Deputy General Manager of the Niagara Region, and his mother, Jennifer Ray, recently departed from her position in the regional business office.
