Mocobizscene-A 6-year-old boy from Miami-Dade becomes a hero when he bravely calls 911 to report the neglect he and his 2-year-old brother are enduring in their home near Miami Shores.
Upon receiving the call, authorities were alerted to the alarming conditions in which the boys were residing. When Miami-Dade police arrived at the scene on the evening of January 3, they were faced with a terrifying sight.
Authorities were provided with a contact number for their mother, Demetria Spencer, by the 6-year-old, but they were unable to reach her. It is still unclear how long the boys were left alone before the 911 call was made.
The Florida Department of Children and Families arrived and took custody of the children after approximately four hours. Law enforcement dedicated twice the amount of time to locate Spencer, who is now facing charges of two counts of child neglect causing no great bodily harm. These charges fall under the category of a third-degree felony for child abuse.
Authorities claim that Spencer did not fulfill her responsibility to provide the necessary care, supervision, and services required for the physical and mental well-being of her sons.
Spencer is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with her bond set at $5,000. If she is found guilty, she could potentially receive a prison sentence ranging from 5 to 15 years, in addition to a fine of $5,000.
