Mother Of Victim Opposes Juvenile Justice Reforms As Maryland Legislative Session Begins In 2024

BALTIMORE- The Maryland legislative session for 2024 is scheduled to commence on Wednesday.

Six months have passed since the devastating Brooklyn Day mass shooting, which is widely considered to be one of the largest mass shootings in Baltimore’s history. On July 2, 2023, Aaliyah Gonzalez, an 18-year-old, tragically lost her life in a shooting incident.

Krystal Gonzalez, the mother of Aaliyah, has been actively advocating for reforms in juvenile laws. In an interview with Fox45, Krystal expressed her thoughts on Governor Wes Moore referring to DJS Secretary Vincent Schiraldi as a reformer.

According to Gonzalez, it is evident that the practices being implemented are not effective. “I believe we’ve all seen the evidence of what his practices are, it’s not working,” Gonzalez stated. Gonzalez strongly disagrees with Schiraldi’s belief that the child’s mind does not fully develop until the age of 25.

“They know to distinguish between right and wrong. So, you might argue that a child below the age of 25 should be treated as an adult in the justice system. However, it’s important to acknowledge that there are numerous adult responsibilities and actions that individuals engage in during their teenage years and early twenties. But when a violent offender commits a heinous act, it’s absurd to suggest that they are not aware of the consequences suddenly. This notion is truly baffling,” expressed Gonzalez.

No one has been charged with Aaliyah’s murder among all the arrests made in the Brooklyn Day mass shooting.

Gonzalez passionately explained the reason behind Aaliyah’s attendance at the Brooklyn Day block party. “My baby made the ultimate sacrifice to bring attention to the existing flawed systems,” she emphasized.
