Rescued: Six Dogs In Kokomo Saved From Neglect

Mocobizscene-Six dogs in Kokomo were saved thanks to the quick action of community members over the weekend. Misty Dexter, an animal advocate, excitedly shared, “As soon as they gave us the green light to take them, we wasted no time getting them into the car. It took us a mere three minutes!”

Dexter successfully persuaded the original owners to surrender the dogs. The six remaining dogs are currently underweight, with some of them having open wounds on their feet and scars on their ears. Despite the conditions, the owners claimed that the dogs were not neglected.

I also contacted the owners, but one of them answered and abruptly ended the call.

Dexter expressed his frustration with the lack of accountability from the agencies responsible for protecting animals. He emphasized that taxpayers fund these agencies with the expectation that they will ensure the well-being of these vulnerable creatures. As animals rely on humans for care and support, it is crucial that these agencies fulfill their duty. However, despite witnessing the dire situation, law enforcement and the humane society failed to take responsibility, which Dexter believes is a clear violation of their job description.

WRTV contacted the Howard County Sheriff’s Office and the Kokomo Humane Society for their input. The sheriff’s office informed us that the matter is currently under investigation by animal control and they have not yet provided a response.

If you suspect signs of animal abuse or neglect, the Indiana State Board of Animal Health advises you to take immediate action. The first step is to contact your local animal control agency. However, if your community does not have an animal control agency, you should reach out to the Sheriff’s Office. It is important to note that animal control is not required by the State of Indiana.

Denise Derrer Spears, a spokesperson for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, explains that the handling and outcomes of cases can vary significantly from one jurisdiction to another.

According to Derrer Spears, animal control or law enforcement personnel carefully examine the situation for any indications of abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

“And all of those have legal definitions in Indiana law, so law enforcement officials will be searching for something that meets those standards,” explained Derrer Spears.

The six canines have been affectionately named the Land Before Love Pack, inspired by the beloved movie The Land Before Time. Five of these adorable dogs are seeking forever homes or temporary foster care. Their names are Cera, Petri, Little Foot, Spike, and Chomper.
