Mocobizscene- The Newark Police Department is preparing to crack down on impaired driving in anticipation of the holiday season. They have scheduled a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint for December 16 in the City of Newark. This initiative aligns with the nationwide efforts of law enforcement agencies to ensure road safety during a period known for a surge in cases of driving under the influence.
The Newark Police Department strategically selects locations for these checkpoints, focusing on areas with a history of DUI-related accidents. They aim to discourage potential offenders from driving under the influence. “Putting others on the road at significant risk, impaired drivers must be stopped,” stated Sergeant Gus Arroyo of the Newark Police Department.
The authorities are using this opportunity to raise awareness among the public about the risks associated with driving under the influence of not only alcohol but also drugs, including both legal and illegal substances. The Newark Police are cautioning against operating a vehicle after consuming certain prescription and over-the-counter medications that can impair driving abilities. They are emphasizing that even though the use of medicinal and recreational marijuana may be legal, it is still illegal to drive while under its influence.
Driving under the influence (DUI) poses significant risks to both public safety and personal finances. Individuals who are caught driving under the influence for the first time may be subject to fines and penalties amounting to a staggering $13,500, and may also have their license suspended. To combat this issue, the enforcement and educational initiatives receive funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety, which operates under the federal jurisdiction of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
