Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is involved in a car accident but is not injured

Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of Florida and a US presidential election hopeful, was in a car accident on the way to a campaign stop in Tennessee on Tuesday, his staff said.

According to a statement sent to AFP by his campaign, he and his team were not injured in the accident, which happened before he was supposed to speak in Chattanooga. The campaign did not give any more information.

“We appreciate the prayers and well wishes of the nation for his continued protection while on the campaign trail,” press secretary Bryan Griffin said.

The accident was the latest failure in a two-month campaign that has had a lot of problems, most of which were caused by the campaigners themselves, starting with a buggy Twitter launch.

US media say that campaign officials have admitted to spending too much, and DeSantis himself has been criticized for being awkward and not being able to connect with regular voters on the campaign path.

National polls show that former president Donald Trump is ahead of Mr. DeSantis by about 33 points as a large group of candidates gets ready for the first debate on August 23 in Milwaukee.

Even though he’s stuck at 18.5 percent, Mr. DeSantis is still far ahead of the other candidates and in the best position to win if Trump’s legal problems forced him out of the race.

In the national average from FiveThirtyEight, former Vice President Mike Pence is third with only 5.6 percent support, which is almost the same as investor Vivek Ramaswamy, who has 5.5 percent.
