Last week, a federal judge handed down a 10-year prison sentence to a Houston man who was caught driving to New Orleans with three kilograms of narcotics hidden in his car.
According to the U.S. attorney’s office, Jorge Issac Gonzalez-Medina, 32, was involved in an illicit drug trafficking organization that transported a variety of drugs from Texas to New Orleans.
During the investigation, the FBI intercepted a conversation between Gonzalez-Medina and one of his clients, where they discussed the potential purchase of heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine.
Federal agents apprehended Gonzalez-Medina on June 18, 2020, as he was driving to New Orleans. Tracking his phone led them to the suspect. During the arrest, law enforcement discovered a significant amount of illegal substances hidden in his vehicle’s rear axle. They found approximately 1,200 grams of a heroin and fentanyl mixture, along with 877 grams of pure fentanyl and 600 grams of heroin. Consequently, Gonzalez-Medina was taken into custody.
Gonzalez-Medina confessed to having the drugs and informed agents that his intention was to sell them.
U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo handed down a sentence on November 29th, sentencing Gonzalez-Medina to the mandatory minimum of ten years in federal prison. Following the prison term, Gonzalez-Medina will also be subjected to five years of supervised release. It is worth mentioning that Milazzo has been serving as a judge in the Eastern District Court of Louisiana since 2011, having been appointed by former president Barack Obama.
