After the incident, authorities confiscated three makeshift weapons and placed Cervantes and Taylor in restricted housing while they investigated the death of Moreno.
In 2004, Moreno was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole for being convicted of two attempted murders in Los Angeles County. During his incarceration, he was also given an additional three-year sentence in 2015 for battery on a non-prisoner.
Upon his arrival at the prison in 2018, Carlos Cervantes, 39, was already serving a life sentence without parole for two first-degree murder convictions in Kern County. In addition, he was facing further prison time for weapon-making and assaulting another inmate in 2020.
In 2017, Armando Taylor, aged 41 and convicted of murder, was transferred to the prison from Imperial County, where he received a life sentence with the possibility of parole. However, due to committing assaults while serving his sentence, he was given additional prison time in both 2020 and 2022.
