On Wednesday, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center hosted the 24th annual Safeway Feast of Caring in D.C. The event provided thousands of individuals with a comforting Thanksgiving meal. The atmosphere was filled with joy and merriment as everyone danced to the music, reveling in the Thanksgiving celebration complete with all the scrumptious fixings.
According to the organizers, over 1,000 volunteers played a pivotal role in feeding around 5,000 people. This was Bailey Spates’ inaugural volunteering experience at the event.
Spates, who recently moved to a new state from Texas, shared her annual Thanksgiving volunteering tradition. She mentioned that she has been volunteering every year since she graduated in 2021 and is determined to keep the tradition alive even in her new location. Although she is new to D.C., giving back is not a foreign concept to her.
According to Spates, serving others is crucial, as she herself has been in situations where she was the one being served. Thus, whenever one has the chance to serve others, it should be taken as a valuable opportunity.
Calvin Palmer, an attendee, expressed that he simply wanted to grab a bite to eat. Volunteers feel fulfilled seeing those they serve with full stomachs. Those who eat also benefit from the satisfaction of having their hunger satisfied. 11-year-old volunteer Amari Butler expressed her fondness for lending a hand to those in dire need. “I like helping other people out that really need stuff,” she said.
The individuals who are receiving meals express their gratitude for the support they are receiving. Daquan McIntyre, an attendee, expressed his gratitude by saying, “I’m genuinely thankful for everything.” Not only was food served, but also winter coats were given out, alongside care packages containing personal hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, and gloves.
Laroux Lance, who attended the event, expressed his admiration for the dedication and compassion of the volunteers. “It’s truly inspiring to see that there are still wonderful people out there who genuinely care about helping others, even on special occasions,” he said.
