Relatives of man shot by police in a restaurant to discuss APD’s release of bodycam footage

The loved ones of a 22-year-old man who was fatally shot by an Atlanta police officer at a Buckhead restaurant are set to break their silence. This comes after the Atlanta police department made public the body camera footage capturing the tragic incident.

On May 18, 2022, outside Fogo de Chao on Piedmont Road, a 22-year-old named Nygil Cullins was shot and killed by an officer.

According to investigators, the perpetrator of the shooting was identified as Cullins, who had previously worked at the site. Reports indicate that Cullins shot a security guard, leading to the tragic incident. Cullins’ parents have since disclosed that their son was in the midst of a mental health crisis during the incident, and they had called for help.

For the past two years, Cullins’ family and their legal representatives have been urging the authorities to disclose the complete body-camera footage from the night of their son’s death. The family has recently taken legal action by filing a federal lawsuit, as they firmly believe that their son’s untimely demise could have been avoided.

The Cullins family has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday at 10 a.m. to address the video footage and their future legal actions.

Michael Doudna from Channel 2 examined segments of the extensive 18-gigabyte footage, spanning over two hours, to gain a clearer understanding of the events that unfolded on that particular night.

As captured in the video, Cullins can be seen sitting at the restaurant’s bar for a prolonged duration and resting his feet on the counter.
