Hiker fatality reported in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge after fall from trail, authorities confirm

A tragic incident occurred in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge, where a young woman lost her life after falling off a cliff during a hiking expedition, as confirmed by officials on Monday.

Elisha Angelic Macias, a 22-year-old hiker, was exploring the Horsetail Falls area with her friends on Sunday, located approximately 35 miles east of Portland. Unfortunately, while she was hiking off the trail and separated from her group, she accidentally fell from a height of around 50 to 60 feet. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this incident through an emailed statement, highlighting that none of her friends witnessed the fall.

Macias hailed from Hillsboro, a city situated approximately 20 miles west of Portland, as confirmed by officials.

At approximately 4:20 p.m. on Sunday, emergency services received a 911 call alerting them to a person falling from a cliff in the vicinity of the Oneonta Trailhead. Another caller confirmed the incident shortly after, mentioning that bystanders were administering CPR.

Despite the valiant efforts of CPR, emergency responders were forced to declare her deceased at the scene.

The search and rescue team of the sheriff’s office provided assistance to the medical examiner in retrieving the body. Currently, the medical examiner is conducting an investigation to determine the precise cause of death.

Officials stated that a team of volunteers from a trauma support group also arrived at the scene to offer assistance and resources to individuals impacted by the incident.
