Community members volunteer to repair homes in historically neglected neighborhood of KCMO

Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City made a valuable contribution to the Town Folk Creek neighborhood by assisting with repairs to multiple homes as part of their Rock the Block campaign on Tuesday morning.

According to Darlene Guess from the Town Fork Creek Neighborhood Association, the neighborhood has experienced both positive and negative periods in the past. However, with some assistance, they are determined to rebuild and strengthen their community.

She expressed the importance of restoring pride in the neighborhood and creating a functional home that residents can be proud of.

Kompass Kapital and Habitat for Humanity of KC collaborated with a team of dedicated volunteers to address long-standing issues caused by neglect in several houses within the community. Despite the challenges faced by residents with limited financial resources, these organizations worked tirelessly to restore and improve the homes.

Scott Hanson from Habitat for Humanity KC emphasized the importance of restoring community pride as a crucial aspect of their work.

Crews came to the aid of Rose Stanford, who was extremely grateful, as they helped her replace the deteriorated wooden deck that she had actually fallen through before.

“I’m filled with joy,” she exclaimed. “I used to adore this neighborhood, but now my love for it has only grown stronger.”

In addition to constructing the deck, volunteers fulfilled one of her long-standing wishes by planting shrubs in her front lawn.

Volunteers took on various tasks in the neighborhood, including painting the exterior walls, repairing access ramps, conducting minor repairs, and landscaping other houses.

According to Lindsay Hicks, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of KC, Rock the Block goes beyond beautification and encompasses social justice, community revitalization, and empowering residents to improve their lives and the lives of their families.
