Severe thunderstorms swept across the region on Sunday afternoon, causing significant damage to houses and trees.
The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Cherokee, Etowah, DeKalb, Calhoun, and St. Clair Counties, as the storms were accompanied by strong winds exceeding 60 mph, intense lightning, small hail, and heavy rainfall. One unfortunate home located on County Road 19 in the Tenalla Community of Cherokee County suffered wind damage, with a portion of its roof blown off.
The Mt. Weisner Volunteer Fire Department and the Centre Department quickly came to the rescue, requesting additional tarps from the latter.
The Cherokee County EMA also responded to the incident. The first round of storms hit the northern communities of the county in the early afternoon, knocking down several trees and causing roadblocks. The second round of storms caused even more trees to fall, affecting a larger area, including County Road 65 and County Road 71.
Reports also noted two trees down on Highway 411 North, from the East end of the Bypass to the Moshat Community. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Although the storms caused significant damage, they also brought much-needed rainfall to the area, which had been suffering from dry conditions and hot temperatures.
