First Report: DonutChew, Mochi Donuts & Drinks, Coming to Gaithersburg’s RIO; Taking Starbucks Space
A new Asian-inspired doughnut shop called DonutChew Mochi Donuts & Drinks is taking over the former Starbucks space at 213 Boardwalk Pl, Gaithersburg MD 20878. The store will join other retailers at the RIO Lakefront such as True Food Kitchen, Fantasticks Gelato, Lanzhou Hand Pull Noodles, and Dave & Buster’s.
DonutChew says their Mochi donuts are not like the ones found in most donut shops and bakeries. Shaped like a pon de ring, they’re made with glutinous rice flour which gives them a dense and “bouncy” texture, striking a balance between that and a sweetness that makes them hard to resist.
The glazed donuts come in 18 variations with flavors including Strawberry Milk, Ube (typically mashed purple yam, coconut milk or condensed milk, and butter), Fruity Pebbles, Thai Milk Tea, Cookies and Cream, and Jolly Pong (a variety covered in puffed wheat Korean cereal). In addition to the main flavors the flavors, DonutChew says a daily variety and special flavors will be available for events and holidays.
DonutChew also offers 8 variations of bubble tea, from Mango Slush to Oreo Slush Crème and a staple, Thai Milk Tea, in between.
This will be DonutChew’s first Montgomery County and Maryland location. The company is branching out of Virginia with five additional locations coming there, it already has locations open at 11703 Fair Oaks Mall #L-145 in Fairfax’s Fairoaks Mall and at 4239 John Marr Dr in Annandale at the K-Market. Moreover, another location will be coming to the Atlanta area in Alpharetta, Georgia.
