Chief says ‘smoke’ coming from Wetumpka ALDI’s roof wasn’t from fire

WETUMPKA, Ala. – According to the city’s fire chief, an apparent fire at a prominent grocery store in Wetumpka caused a stir on social media over the weekend, but there were no flames.

Sunday, Wetumpka firefighters responded to the ALDI on U.S. Highway 231 but found no fire, despite social media images showing what appeared to be smoke emanating from the roof.

According to Wetumpka Fire Chief Greg Willis, the evident smoke was actually steam produced by a freon leak in the rooftop air conditioning unit.

The company’s maintenance staff has since repaired the issue.
