On Wednesday, the Alabama woman who sparked worry and triggered a statewide search after she vanished was convicted of inventing her own kidnapping.
In July, Carlee Russell, who is 26 years old, caught the attention of the nation when she dialed 911 to report a toddler wandering alone near an interstate in Alabama before disappearing. Despite a search that lasted several days, the child was found unaccompanied.
Upon investigation, law enforcement officials determined that her abduction story was unfounded and pressed charges against her accordingly.
Judge Brad Bishop of the Hoover Municipal Court delivered his verdict on Wednesday, finding Russell guilty of providing false reports to law enforcement and falsely reporting a police matter.
According to the judge’s recommendation, she should be sentenced to a year in prison and pay around $19,500 in restitution and fines.
According to Russell’s legal team, they have intentions to challenge the verdict in circuit court.
