According to the police, Luis Cevallos was driving his Kia Stinger recklessly and at an excessive speed with Alexis Rodriguez as his passenger. North Bergen police officer Jon Nunez stopped them at 61st Street and Kennedy Boulevard at around 1:50 a.m. on August 4th, 2021.
On September 21, 2023, a video showcasing the response to a stop and crash incident was shared on the Drive Thru Tours YouTube channel. The video has gained popularity and as of Wednesday, September 27, it has amassed over 1.2 million views.
As the officer made a stop, a concerned woman approached him and shared her observation that Cevallos was driving at an alarming speed, almost hitting a cyclist on the road. Her words conveyed a sense of urgency and worry about the safety of others on the road.
As per Nunez’s account, he pulled over Cevallos for multiple violations, including reckless driving, careless driving, and speeding. Nunez issued Cevallos a ticket for reckless driving, running a traffic light, and driving after hours, resulting from his provisional license.
During the traffic stop, Rodriguez admits to the officer that he and his date were on their first date and that the reason for the stop was “her fault.” Nunez clarifies that if they were to get into a car accident, it wouldn’t be her fault, but the fault of the driver.
In a span of less than half an hour, Nunez was called to the scene of an accident on Routes 1&9. The accident involved a sedan and a tractor-trailer. To his surprise, Nunez discovered that the car involved in the accident belonged to Cevallos – the same car he had just pulled over.
As captured in the Drive Thru Tours video, Nunez can be heard exclaiming “Yo, this is the same kid” as he excitedly runs towards the vehicle. His amazement is evident as he repeats “Oh my gosh” multiple times.
The fatal crash claimed the lives of both Cevallos, a resident of North Arlington, and Rodriguez, who hailed from Bergenfield.
