On Wednesday morning, drivers and pedestrians were able to use the North Druid Hills Road bridge again after a 90-day closure for construction and repairs.
Mark McKay from Triple Team Traffic confirmed that he drove across the bridge early on Wednesday and verified that it was open.
Crews have been reconstructing the bridge for several months as part of the I-85 at SR 42/North Druid Hills Road Project initiated by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Consequently, the bridge has remained closed for an extended period.
GDOT had to close the section of the latest State Route 42/North Druid Hills Road bridge over North Fork Peachtree Creek since April 29. The closure was necessary to speed up the demolition and reconstruction of the old bridge, which was initially constructed in 1962. Drivers and all other traffic were not allowed to use the section during this time.
GDOT expressed gratitude for the understanding of drivers and the collaboration of their community partners, which enabled them to construct the new bridge rapidly and securely. As they prepare to resume their regular operations, they acknowledge the patience of motorists during the bridge’s reconstruction.
According to Albert (Butch) Welch, the Principal in Charge of Georgia DOT, the new North Druid Hills Road bridge over North Fork Peachtree Creek is now open. He expressed his satisfaction with the completion of this project as it is a crucial route that accommodates a significant volume of traffic. The construction team worked tirelessly to replace the bridge while minimizing the impact on commuters.
According to GDOT, the reconstruction effort involved expanding the bridge structure to accommodate higher traffic levels. Additionally, the bridge was equipped with several safety features to ensure the safety of pedestrians, including wider sidewalks and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act at crosswalks.
The new bridge boasts three lanes dedicated to vehicles in both directions and also provides pedestrian access on its southside. However, the construction work is still ongoing as the workers are in the process of adding a fourth lane to each direction and an additional sidewalk on the northside.
