Officer from Floyd County saves a baby hawk discovered injured on the road

On Wednesday, a Floyd County police officer went above and beyond the call of duty to fulfill the expectation of “protect and serve”.

Ofc. Tucker of the Floyd County Police Department came to the rescue of an injured baby hawk that was found on the road.

Upon arrival, the young bird was transferred to the raptor rehabilitation program at the Lake Arrowhead Wildlife Center in Armuchee for care and support.

According to the Georgia Ornithological Society, Georgia is home to eight species of hawk, although it was not clear from a video shared by the Floyd County police which specific species was involved.

The hawks of Georgia have been listed by the organization’s species list and they include:

    • Sharp-shinned Hawk, Accipiter striatus
    • Cooper’s Hawk, Accipiter cooperii
    • Red-shouldered Hawk, Buteo lineatus
    • Broad-winged Hawk, Buteo platypterus
    • Short-tailed Hawk, Buteo brachyurus
    • Red-tailed Hawk, Buteo jamaicensis
    • Rough-legged Hawk, Buteo lagopus
    • Northern Goshawk, Accipiter gentilis

Furthermore, within the state, there exists a population of the Chordeiles minor, commonly known as the Common Nighthawk. It is important to note that despite its name, the Common Nighthawk is not a species of hawk.
