Tragically, a 17-year-old has passed away following a crash that occurred just moments after the Indianapolis police ceased their pursuit of a car he was a passenger in. The police had been investigating a group of armed teenagers at the time.
On Sunday, a group of young males were reported to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for brandishing firearms in the downtown area. As officers were on their way to investigate, they received information that the juveniles had concealed the guns in a parked car.
Upon arriving in the vicinity, the officers initiated a pursuit on foot of the group of teenagers. A single male minor was apprehended and subsequently released, however, the remaining members of the group were not located.
The Real Time Crime Center at IMPD noticed that a person, who was already prohibited from possessing firearms, sat on the driver’s seat of a stationary car while carrying a gun. Along with him, two other minors were present in the vehicle, including 17-year-old Terryoun Mays.
IMPD reported that when the car left the downtown area, responding officers tried to perform a traffic stop. At first, the driver pulled over and stopped, but then he failed to comply with further commands and ultimately drove away.
The car was pursued by officers until it disappeared from their sight, and as a result, the pursuit was eventually called off. On Monday, IMPD stated that the officers proceeded to pull over to the side of the road and came to a complete stop.
IMPD reported that the suspect’s car crashed and flipped over on Brill Road’s 2600 block, about three minutes after the initial report. The driver and two passengers, including Mays, were rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.
The Marion County Coroner confirmed the devastating news on Monday morning that one of the passengers in the car, a 17-year-old named Mays, had passed away due to his injuries. This news has left a heavy heart in the community.
Immediately following the crash, IMPD activated accident investigators to examine the scene. Upon searching the vehicle, law enforcement officials discovered two firearms, a drum-style magazine, as well as several rounds of ammunition.
IMPD has not provided any further information at this time. As soon as new details are released, this article will be updated accordingly.
