A state lawmaker has successfully brought the legacies of two iconic figures, Helen Keller and Rosa Parks, to life in bronze at the Alabama State Capitol. This remarkable feat will ensure that their contributions to society will be forever remembered and celebrated.
In 2019, Rep. Laura Hall (D-Madison) lent her support to a bill that called for the creation of statues on the capitol’s premises, recognizing the absence of any statues honoring women. Her advocacy for the bill highlighted the need for more representation of women on the capitol’s grounds.
Hall encouraged everyone, particularly young women, to recognize their potential to make a positive impact and become the trailblazers who pave the way for success in Alabama and beyond. “It’s within reach for all of us,” she expressed.
Using her sculpting skills, Julia Knight was chosen to create the stunning Rosa Parks statue. With great attention to detail, she meticulously crafted the nine-foot six-inch statue from clay before casting it into bronze.
According to Knight, Rosa Parks has been portrayed in a very limited way, and he wanted to change that with his sculpture. He aimed to showcase the many different sides of her personality and character that often go unnoticed.
According to Knight, her intention behind creating the statue was to depict Parks in motion rather than sitting, as a tribute to her unwavering determination in the face of adversity. Knight wanted to showcase how Parks rose to the occasion and took on the challenge with grace and courage.
Knight emphasized that the life of the subject was far from simple; there was no sudden decision to rise up from her seat. Contrary to popular belief, she was not merely a weary seamstress, but a committed and passionate activist.
Knight stated that the iron casting of the Rosa Parks statue is currently underway, and the only remaining task is to add the granite foundation.
The Women’s Tribute Statue Commission is currently in the process of preparing the sites where the statues will be unveiled on two separate dates.
