Alabama beaches to be guarded by ALEA helicopter with new funding

A state trooper helicopter is now on duty to help protect the beaches of Alabama. It is stationed in Gulf Shores and will be working full-time in this role.

It’s not just about monitoring potential problem areas in the Gulf, but also about deploying rescue swimmers to the most critical locations as needed.

According to Gulf Shores Fire Chief Mark Sealy, they initiated this project approximately three years ago, and this new development is merely an extension of their ongoing efforts.

The ALEA helicopter can cover the distance between Flora Bama and Fort Morgan in just a matter of minutes. The prompt deployment of rescue swimmers can prove to be crucial in saving lives during emergencies.

State Senator Chris Elliott (R-District 32) assured that there will be an increase in patrols with the $400,000 in state funding. This funding will allow for 70 to 100 helicopter trips along the coast annually.

Elliott explained that this enables them to not only respond promptly but also to already be in the air.

Looking down from high up in the sky, one can gain a unique perspective of the immense waves and treacherous currents present in the gulf, which explains why the waters are off-limits to swimmers.

Sealy expressed his sympathy towards the situation by comparing it to the disappointment of finding a closed roller coaster at an amusement park. He acknowledged that he understands the frustration, but emphasized that the current circumstance is a completely different beast. According to him, this gulf is unrelenting.

When it comes to rescue missions, having a bird’s-eye view and a skilled rescue swimmer on board can be the key to saving someone’s life. Hearing a distress call and being able to act quickly and efficiently can make all the difference in the world.
