During the Alabama Women’s Commission event, Rep. Barbara Drummond, who represents Mobile, emphasized the importance of tackling child care concerns in the state.
During a conversation about the commission’s potential actions and regional events, Drummond mentioned that one of her constituents had raised concerns about child care during the summer.
She stated that this problem was a matter of survival for her, and she believed that it was something that women all across the state were experiencing.
During the discussion, Rep. Terri Collins, a Republican from Decatur, suggested the possibility of collaborating with the Women’s Foundation of Alabama on a matter related to the topic at hand.
In an email on Wednesday, Kim Cochran, spokesperson for the Women’s Foundation of Alabama, expressed optimism about the growing support for improving access to affordable and high-quality child care. Cochran emphasized the importance of collaboration, encouraging stakeholders across the state to work together to ensure that parents can access child care that enables them to enter and stay in the workforce.
The commission’s primary focus is on matters related to women residing in the state.
During the 2024 regular legislative session, the Alabama Legislature approved a tax credit for child care. Addressing the concern of Alabama’s workforce participation rate, child care was a topic that was discussed in meetings.
