According to authorities, two DUI drivers caused a chain reaction crash on I-495 that resulted in a Virginia State Police trooper being hospitalized.
According to a representative from the VSP, a trooper was sent to assist a sedan that had stopped near Exit 52 in Fairfax County in the early hours of the morning. The incident occurred in a northbound lane and was reported at approximately 3 a.m.
According to the Virginia State Police, the driver of the sedan was uncooperative and refused to exit the vehicle or move it to a safer location on the shoulder. The trooper was attempting to engage with the individual when a Jeep Cherokee collided with a tractor-trailer that had stopped because of the closed travel lane caused by the sedan. The sedan’s driver was still in the vehicle during this incident.
As a result of the collision, the Jeep spun around and collided with the trooper’s patrol car. The patrol car then hit the sedan, which ultimately hit the trooper standing beside the driver’s side of the vehicle.
After the incident, the trooper was rushed to Fairfax INOVA Hospital for a thorough evaluation. Thankfully, he only suffered minor injuries. It’s worth noting that his patrol car was parked behind the sedan and had its emergency lights on at the time of the incident.
While the sedan’s driver was still inside the car during the accident, they sustained minor injuries and received treatment.
Authorities arrested the driver of the stationary sedan on charges of driving under the influence of drugs (DUID), while the driver of the Jeep Cherokee was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Both individuals were taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
