DCSO reports pursuit of MS man followed by his report of stolen car

In Shelby County, a man who was wanted on warrants out of DeSoto County got arrested after he reported his car as stolen following a high-speed pursuit.

A car was pulled over by the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office on May 30 for a traffic violation.

According to reports, the car was unresponsive to attempts to stop it and started driving on the side of the road. It went on to pass other vehicles and was seen weaving in and out of traffic, nearly colliding with several cars.

The suspect’s car surged forward, hitting speeds of 105 mph as the chase persisted.

According to DCSO, Brandon Gathings was identified as the driver of the vehicle by the deputy, who was able to read its registration. It was reported that Gathings has evaded the deputy on multiple occasions in the past.

During the chase, additional deputies made an effort to halt the suspect’s vehicle by deploying spike strips. However, due to dangerous circumstances, the deputy in charge terminated the pursuit.

After about two hours, Gathings made an attempt to report his vehicle as stolen in Shelby County. Upon running Gathings’ information through NCIC, Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies discovered that he had several warrants for offenses in DeSoto County.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department has apprehended him and he is currently being held at 201 Poplar while awaiting extradition to Mississippi.
