Officials report an 83-year-old woman was attacked by a bison at Yellowstone National Park.

According to the National Park Service, while visiting the park on June 1, a woman from Greenville, South Carolina, had a terrifying encounter with a bison that came within a few feet of her. The bison lifted her about a foot off the ground with its horns, as per the statement.

According to the agency, the bison appeared to be protecting its territory during the incident.

The emergency responders of the park swiftly took the woman to the Lake Medical Clinic, where she was later airlifted via helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

Authorities reported that the woman sustained “serious injuries” during the incident, but no further information has been provided regarding her current condition.

As per the National Park Service, the occurrence took place close to the Storm Point Trail situated at Yellowstone Lake.

Officials advise that it is essential for individuals to maintain a distance of at least 25 yards from larger animals, such as bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes. It is crucial to note that for bears and wolves, the recommended distance is 100 yards.

According to the agency, bison are generally not aggressive creatures, but they will stand their ground when they feel threatened.
