Despite facing opposition and legal challenges from residents of Gwinnett County, the incorporation of the City of Mulberry was successfully approved by voters in Tuesday night’s elections.
According to initial results in Gwinnett County, nearly 57% of voters supported the establishment of the City of Mulberry.
After successfully passing the ballot referendum, the vote paves the way for the next phase in the establishment of Mulberry.
In February, Mulberry was created after receiving approval from Gov. Brian Kemp and passing the state legislature.
Legal challenges ensued, but they were resolved just in time for the vote to proceed after a judge’s ruling.
Stephen Hughes, the individual who filed a lawsuit to prevent the referendum vote from taking place, has expressed his intention to continue the legal battle. In an interview with Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson, Hughes stated that he intends to challenge the city’s incorporation once more. He believes that voters may have been deceived regarding the tax status of the city.
The Tuesday night ballot results have given the green light for the city’s formation to proceed.
