Honoring fallen officers: A tribute from loved ones and the state

A somber tribute took place on Tuesday to honor the brave law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the state.

The loved ones of State Troopers understand the daily risks they face while patrolling the highways. They are acutely aware that these law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day. The memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice is always present in the minds of the families they left behind.

The family of Michael Griffin, the Mississippi State trooper who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in September, paid a heartfelt tribute by placing a rose in his honor. During the Fallen Officer Memorial Service, the lives of 38 troopers, spanning from 1940 to present, were remembered and celebrated.

“I’ve been coming here every year,” shared Brenda Langham.

Billy’s husband was only 37 years old when he tragically lost his life near Collins in December of 1981. It’s disheartening to know that the last remaining offender among the four who were convicted for this crime is now being considered for parole.

“It’s a difficult situation, but it fills me with pride to see that they still remember him,” Langham expressed.

Don Nash made a journey all the way from Gulfport to attend the memorial. His brother, George “Danny” Nash Junior, who had just completed patrol school two months prior, tragically lost his life in February of 1983 near Meadville.

The legislature has recently approved a bill that will raise the death benefits for the families of law enforcement officers.

Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell announced that officers and first responders who lose their lives in the line of duty will receive financial support ranging from $100,000 to $250,000. Additionally, these funds will cover funeral expenses, alleviating the burden on the families who would otherwise have to raise money for these costs.

The memorial is always a challenging time for loved ones, but it holds immense significance for them to come back every year, knowing that someone cares and remembers.
