Federal prosecutors are urging the judge presiding over the criminal contempt of Congress case against former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon to enforce his four-month prison sentence. This comes after an appeals court upheld his conviction last week.
According to prosecutors, Judge Carl Nichols has no legal grounds to maintain the stay on Bannon serving his sentence. This comes after the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals’ final ruling, which rejected the basis for Bannon’s appeal on all grounds.
According to prosecutors, they argue that there is no longer a significant legal question that would likely lead to a reversal or a new trial.
The timing of Nichols’ decision on the request is currently uncertain.
“I’m absolutely astonished that they would try to suppress the voice of MAGA,” Bannon expressed to ABC News in response to Tuesday’s announcement.
Steve Bannon received a four-month prison sentence for contempt in October 2022. However, Nichols decided to delay the commencement of the jail term as Bannon pursued an appeal against the ruling.
The opinion of the three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, stated on Friday, concludes that the trial subpoenas did not contain any relevant information regarding the elements of the contempt offense or any affirmative defense that Bannon was entitled to present at trial.
