Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has identified the officer who was tragically killed as Luis M. Huesca. Mayor Johnson described this devastating loss as a direct consequence of “an act of senseless gun violence in our city.”
Huesca was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center after being taken there, according to officials.
Detectives are currently investigating whether the officer was shot during a carjacking, according to Snelling.
According to Snelling, there is currently no confirmation on the matter, but the detectives are actively investigating it. The officer’s vehicle has been reported as stolen. However, in order to fully understand the motive behind the incident, further information is needed, and the detective division is diligently working on gathering it.
No arrests have been announced.
The shooting occurred at approximately 2:53 a.m. in the Gage Park neighborhood on West 56th Street near South Kedzie Avenue, as reported by the police. Upon receiving a gunshot detection alert, officers arrived at the scene and discovered the officer gravely injured, lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
According to Snell, the officer who was shot was a six-year veteran of the CPD. He was wearing his uniform, with a jacket over it, at the time of the incident.
According to Snelling, our officer was on his way home after completing his tour of duty. During his journey, the officer was subjected to multiple gunshots.
The shooting occurred in the 8th Police District on the Southwest Side of the city, according to CPD.
“He tirelessly worked to ensure the safety of communities and individuals, but today, that officer became a victim of the very crime he dedicated himself to combatting. In this city, there is an alarming prevalence of violent crime, and there are individuals who, in a brazen and cowardly manner, carry out these acts against hardworking and law-abiding citizens. It is imperative that we put an end to this cycle of violence.”
According to Snelling, the officer leaves behind his mother and an uncle as his surviving family members.
Snelling expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the fallen officer, emphasizing that he was not only an exceptional officer but also a remarkable human being. He acknowledged the immense burden the family is currently facing and urged the community to keep them, particularly the officer’s mother, in their thoughts and prayers. Snelling lamented the devastating impact of such senseless crimes that continue to claim the lives of community members, emphasizing that the loss of this officer serves as a tragic reminder of this reality.
