The wildfire that occurred near the border of Platte and Buchanan Counties has been successfully contained as of early Thursday evening. Officials have diligently worked to bring the fire under control, ensuring the safety of the affected areas.
Crews will continue to remain on site to monitor hot spots, according to officials who spoke to KSHB 41’s Charlie Keegan.
Highway 45/273 will stay closed at the intersection with Highway 59 throughout the night.
Earlier, the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department reported that a wildfire is currently spreading rapidly near the Evergy Iatan Power Plant in Weston Township, Missouri.
The fire has spiraled out of control, as reported by a spokesperson from the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office to KCPD.
The wildfire continues to spread along the boundary of Buchanan and Platte counties.
The fire originated in the Sugar Lake community in Buchanan County, according to Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett.
The lake has completely dried up, and the fire has ravaged the area, extending its destructive path both north and south.
Firefighters from eight different fire departments, including South Lake, DeKalb County, and South Central Buchanan County, are currently engaged in battling the fire.
According to Sheriff Puett, one firefighter experienced minor smoke inhalation and received immediate treatment at the scene.
The fire rapidly spread into the bluffs in Platte County after jumping the junction at Missouri highways 45 and 59.
