Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) revealed on Tuesday that he has received a cancer diagnosis.
Representing Arizona’s 7th Congressional District since 2003, Grijalva recently shared in a statement that he had been receiving treatment for a persistent cough. Initially diagnosed with pneumonia, further testing revealed the presence of cancer.
“I have found it challenging to come to terms with this diagnosis, but I have full trust and confidence in the comprehensive treatment plan that my medical team has crafted. I have already embarked on my journey to battle this cancer,” expressed Grijalva.
Grijalva, a prominent Democrat, holds several key positions within the House of Representatives. He serves as the leading Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, showcasing his expertise in environmental matters. Additionally, he is a valuable member of the Education and Labor Committee and holds the esteemed title of Chair Emeritus of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Grijalva’s dedication to representing Hispanic Americans is demonstrated through his membership in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Grijalva assured that his offices would stay open and services would continue without any interruptions.
“I continue to work and stay in constant communication with my staff while receiving treatment,” he emphasized.
Grijalva has chosen not to reveal the specific type of cancer he has been diagnosed with.
Over the past few years, several lawmakers have experienced health issues, yet they have continued to hold their positions in office and leadership roles.
Several incidents last year raised concerns when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) experienced freezing episodes. This year, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) underwent treatment for blood cancer. Additionally, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) was elected after recovering from a stroke he suffered on the 2022 campaign trail. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) also had to undergo intestinal surgery earlier this year.
Grijalva is requesting privacy as he navigates his own diagnosis.
“I am thankful to my family, friends, and doctors for their unwavering support. I am putting in my utmost effort to regain my health and resume my regular activities as soon as possible,” expressed Grijalva. “I am truly grateful for your understanding, kind wishes, and the respect shown towards my family’s privacy during this challenging period. My thoughts are with those who are also battling cancer, and I wish everyone the fortitude to face their own struggles.”
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus, led by Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-Calif.), expressed their support and concern for Rep. Raúl Grijalva, acknowledging that he and his family are in their thoughts and prayers.
According to Barragán, Grijalva is not only a respected colleague but also a prominent figure in Congress as the Ranking Member of the Natural Resources Committee. She acknowledges Grijalva’s unwavering dedication to fighting for our country’s public lands, natural resources, and tribes on a daily basis. With over two decades of service in the U.S. House of Representatives, Grijalva has proven himself to be a passionate advocate and committed public servant for the people of Arizona. As a valuable member of the Caucus, his wealth of experience and wisdom is highly regarded by his peers. Barragán assures that the CHC will provide unwavering support to Raúl and his Congressional staff as he battles against cancer, confident that he will approach this fight with his characteristic resilience and determination.
