Maryland Governor Defends Against Critics Blaming DEI for Baltimore Bridge Collapse

Maryland Governor Wes Moore (D-MD) strongly criticized right-wing critics who attributed the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.

During an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Moore was questioned about his views on DEI, an acronym that represents “Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion.”

Republicans are attempting to attribute the bridge collapse to policies that promote workplace diversity. A Utah state representative, who is currently campaigning for governor, expressed on Twitter, “This is the outcome when governors prioritize diversity over the safety and welfare of citizens.” Similarly, another Republican candidate running for Congress in Florida posted, “DEI did this.” How do you react to these statements?

“I don’t have time for nonsense! I am fully focused,” Moore stated firmly, adding,

I’m making sure that we can get closure and comfort to these families. I’m making sure that we’re going to keep our first responders safe, doing heroic work. I’m making sure that we’re going to open up this channel and be able to get boats and ships and get our economic engine going again. I’m making sure that we’re taking care of our people to include our first responders and families and small businesses who’ve been impacted by this. And I’m making sure that we are going to get the Key Bridge rebuilt. I have no time for foolishness, and so I’m not going to delve into it.

Bash inquired if the criticisms against DEI could be considered a manifestation of racism.

“I am fully committed to ensuring that these families receive the comfort and closure they deserve,” Moore emphasized. “Equally important is providing the necessary support to our first responders and expediting the reopening of essential channels. Additionally, our top priority is the reconstruction of the Key Bridge. At this moment, I don’t have the luxury of dealing with anything else. My sole focus is on what truly matters.”
