The Metropolitan Police Department has provided a detailed account of the events that led to a tragic crash on Friday morning in Northeast DC. However, it is important to note that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
At 6:50 a.m. on March 29th, a Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck was traveling north on the interstate and nearing the Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue exit when the collision occurred, according to the police.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the truck moved onto the right shoulder of the road and collided with the guard rail. While attempting to merge back into the travel lane, the driver lost control and swerved to the left, hitting the cement jersey wall.
Investigators have reported that the truck proceeded to ascend the wall, colliding with a southbound Toyota Camry, before finally coming to a halt on top of the jersey wall and erupting in flames.
Tragically, the driver of the truck was unable to escape the vehicle and lost their life at the accident site. However, a Sixth District officer managed to rescue the passenger from the wreckage and swiftly transported them to a nearby hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
According to investigators, there was an incident on I-295 where a Dodge Ram 3500 collided with a jersey wall that had been pushed outward into the southbound lanes. The driver and three passengers were subsequently transported to local hospitals for treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries.
The police have not yet disclosed the identity of the pick-up driver involved in the incident. Fortunately, the driver of the Toyota vehicle involved in the accident did not sustain any injuries. The authorities are currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
