Court documents filed in Jackson County Circuit Court reveal that the man charged with the fatal shooting of Independence Police Officer Cody Allen and Jackson County Civil Process Server Drexel Mack has been denied a public defender.
Larry Acree, charged with two counts of first-degree murder, made a court appearance on March 15 without legal representation. A group of around a dozen Independence police officers were also present at the hearing.
Acree completed an application for the public defender’s office during the hearing.
The public defender’s office denied Acree’s request for legal services in a filing made on Monday. The reason cited for the denial was that Acree’s income and/or available assets exceeded the guidelines set by the office.
A hearing has been scheduled for this Friday to determine Acree’s eligibility for legal services.
He is currently being held at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center on a bond of $2 million, which must be paid in cash.
